I (heart) Audio Books

A Dog's Purpose: A Novel for Humans | [W. Bruce Cameron]I started listening to audio books a few years back in order to make my morning commute more interesting. But once my driving routine changed, I stopped listening. Though I still read a good book every now and again...I began missing the guilty pleasure of having someone read  to me.

I realize audio books can be a bit more costly than an actual printed book.  But listening to these stories makes me more productive. Instead of selfishly relaxing with a book, I'm able to carry on with my day to day activities with great enjoyment and anticipation. And as an artist, it's interesting to see my work take on the style or mood of the day's tale.

Which brings me to the wonderful book I just began, "A Dog's Purpose" by W. Bruce Cameron. A sweetly sad and emotional rollercoaster of a dog's love and insight.  My creations today mindlessly gravitated towards blue and green tones. A quick search on google tells me this reflects feelings of love, kindness, devotion and emotional depth. Yep.... today's tale, filled with tears and laughter, can be seen on my workbench.

Slavery is so vile and miserable an estate of man, and so directly opposite to the generous temper and courage of our nation; that it is hardly to be conceived, that an Englishman, much less a gentleman, should plead for it. And truly I should have taken Sir Robert Filmer’s Patriarcha, as any other treatise, which would persuade all men, that they are slaves, and ought to be so, for such another exercise of wit, as was his who writ the encomium of Nero; rather than for a serious discourse meant in earnest, had not the gravity of the title and epistle, the picture in the front of the book, and the applause that followed it, required me to believe, that the author and publisher were both in earnest.

Well, when I had thus put mine ends together
I show’d them others, that I might see whether
They would condemn them, or them justify:
And some said, let them live; some, let them die:
Some said, John, print it; others said, Not so:
Some said, It might do good; others said, No.
